RSS Help in Google Reader

Written by Gaje Master on July 25th, 2008

Google has been around for a long time and so has Google Reader but there are still a lot of people who are not using it for the full benefit. I use Google Reader as my source for signing up for RSS feeds simply because it is the easiest to use and it can even be integrated into your web browser.

What is Google Reader?

Simply put, Google reader is an Rss reader with many features.

What are some of the features?

There are a ton of features for Google reader including the ability to add an RSS feed with one click of a button, being able to keep track of your favorite blogs or websites, adding folders to organize your feeds, and much more.

How to use Google Reader

To use Google reader you must have a Google account. Once you have set up your account you can go to the Google Reader main page and set everything up. While you are there roam around and check it out. On the left hand side after you are logged in you will see a link that says add subscription. The add subscription link will allow you to add all of your favorite RSS feeds. There is also another way of using Google Reader without having to go to the google reader home page.

Google Toolbar

With the capability to add just about anything to make your online browsing much easier, the Google Toolbar now allows you to access your Google Reader through it. At the Google Reader homepage you can go to settings and set everything up the way that you want and even arrange your Google reader so that the start up page shows the exact folder that you want it to show. I have mine set up where it shows my competitors blogs first so that I know what I am in competition with. There is also a really cool little feature that allows you to add a button into your bookmarks toolbar so that you can look through your reader. The button will allow you to surf through your reader and each time that you click on the button a new page from your feeder will pop up in the same browser.

Subscribe as you surf

This is another feature that I love about Google reader. Subscribing while you surf is something that most bloggers can use since we are often subscribing throughout our day. If you want to subscribe, just hit the button and add what folder you want it placed in at that is it.

Do I recommend Google Reader?

After reading this you should already know the answer but if you missed it then the answer is a big fat yes. I recommend Google Reader so much that I am telling you about it.

Will I need to tweak my blog?

Nope. Once you add your RSS Feed to your blog and the people click on it they should get an option to add it to whatever reader that they choose. I also recommend that you add a post to your blog and tell everyone about it since it is also the easiest way to see who all is subscribed to you using the Google Analytics.
